The children in my class finally realised that the mother-helper, who comes and listens to readers on Monday mornings, and her daughter have different surnames, even though her parents are married.
I explained that now it's not always compulsory for women to change their surnames when they get married, and that it's down to each individual's personal choice.
me: Like, for instance, when I got married I could have kept my childhood surname and you'd be calling me Ms Mayger, but instead I made the decision to change my surname to the same as my husband's.
kid: So what are you called now?
*thunk*
